Our first year garden at "Troost Farm"

The first year we lived on Troost (2005), needless to say, we had a LOT to accomplish to make the place liveable and studio ready.  The second year we bought the two vacant lots to our south to make into a garden and whatever else.  It is about 17000 sq. ft. so there's plenty of room to do a lot of things.  We cultivated the front section and hired a neighbor to create some rows for us to plant on.  The tomato crop was INSANE - we were eating just-ripened tomatoes into Thanksgiving!

The second year of gardening had us filling many many salvaged glass crates with soil mixed from leaf compost, sand, sawdust and dirt.  Along with the other veggies, we planted corn that year, four whole stalks!  It was the best!

Summer 2008, we participated in the Kansas City Urban Farms and Gardens TourIt was a smashing success!  We spoke with many fellow gardeners sharing tips while we enjoyed a nice break in the weather.  Thanks to Edgar, Alonso, and Abraham who, through the killer heat, helped us put on the finishing touches .

Cathryn's grandson began digging the hole (when he was nine years old) and we laid the rubber pond liner three years later. Since we had not bought plants yet, and the algae had taken a serious hold within two days after filling, we added the muffin and bundt pan "waterlillies"to shade the surface until the actual ones have been introduced.

Winter 2009-10 brought more snow than memory can recall.

The courtyard greenhouse we put up late Fall 2010.  We'll be starting a lot of seeds here in early Spring.
